Travel sketches

I recently found a sketchbook from my travels last year. Always a nice surprise when you come across a sketchbook thought previously lost and forgotten.

The Show: Online (finally)

I'm very happy to finally release my short animation, The Show, online!

This was my graduate film, produced at RMIT in late 2010. It premiered online a few weeks ago, and some people have asked about my production process.  All the animation was digitally hand drawn in Flash frame by frame, using a Cintiq tablet. It was then composited together with the painted watercolour backgrounds and treated in After Effects.

I've always been fascinated with circus life, especially that which was "off" show.

Some of my original inspiration:

Enjoy!

The happenings...

It's been a very long while between posts, hard to believe it's almost October!

I've been keeping busy with some upcoming Sisters Hayes projects. We're currently preparing for our exhibition The Great un Reveala project with Arts Project Australia artists. Christina, Esther and I have been collaborating with each exhibiting artist, creating new work to be revealed at the opening, Saturday October 20 (mark your diaries!)

You can see the work taking shape over at our exhibition blog.

We also recently had the chance to decorate the Malthouse Theatre foyer for their Season 2013 Launch... we decided to go with TASSELS! Over 2000 tassels to be exact...

A big shout out to all the lovely volunteers, friends, family and folk who came in for a crafternoon or two to help us hit quota. The RSI paid off!

Blood Wedding at the Malthouse

As some of you know, when I'm not animating or illustrating something new, I'm often working on a new collaboration or project with my two sisters as The Sisters Hayes.

For the past few months we've been busily designing the set and costumes for Malthouse Theatre's production of Blood Wedding, which opened last Thursday. The whole cast and crew have been amazing to work with. The season finishes August 19 and there are still tickets left!

Craft Hatch wrap up!

A few weeks ago I packed up a bunch of new cards and limited edition prints and went to market- Craft Hatch market that is! It was great to meet the other artists and makers (whilst eating perhaps a few too many cookies) and get an instant response to my work from those who stopped by.

A few select images below- some of the work will be avaliable in my online store, opening in the next few weeks!

I will have a selection of new (and never before seen- this is exclusive, folks) limited edition prints and handmade cards on offer as well as some homemade cookies, if you're lucky. Six Seasons and a Movie

A while ago I was invited to submit some work to the Six Seasons and a Movie art show taking place in LA this June. To take it straight from the press release, "hosted at Monk Space in Los Angeles on June 23-24, the event will be a weekend celebration of all things “Community” as interpreted through the vision of over 130 artists from around the world. " A little birdy told me some production crew and writers from the show are also exhibiting work...

For my piece I went about imagining what a season six finale might actually be like. What could be more epic than paintball? Perhaps... an epic musical revolution? So here it is, the study room barricade that just might be:

Revolutionary Studies into Musical Theatre

If you're a fan of the show and live near the LA area, you should check out the show! I hear there will be costumes and prizes (including sombrero wearing frogs) and other surprises. Click here for the facebook event.

New news

Has it really been 3 weeks since my last post? 2012 is moving so quickly I can barely keep up!

I've been working on a lot of different projects lately, from repurposing my animation,"The Show", for a multi-channel installation at RMIT (in 3D!), to busily working on set/costume design with The Sisters Hayes for an upcoming show at the Malthouse, to working with Rae &  Bennett Fine Art Printers to create some new limited edition giclee prints which will be available online verrrry soon. All while still trying to keep up with my portrait a day challenge (126 portraits in and counting).

Phew!

A lot of it all is still in the "secret" stage, so I don't get to share much here. I can however share this little preview of one my recent prints!

As always, the loverly ladies at Rae & Bennett worked their magic with their Epson 9900 to get the perfect print, and I was really chuffed with how this one came out. I'm almost finished putting together my online store, where this and more illustrations will soon be available. Exciting times.

PS. I forgot to mention this earlier- Cat Rabbit and Isobel Knowles' amazing children's book, Owl Know How, is finally out! If you're in Melbourne you probably already have your hands on a copy (or have been desperately pining for one)-

I was lucky enough to help out on the original animation which inspired the book (below). All I remember from being on set is constantly combusting into fits of cuteness-overload.

The images in the book perfectly capture all the personality and fluffiness of the film. Cat and Isobel made all the intricate sets, props and characters by hand, and the textures, colours and patterns come out beautifully. The book even comes with a free owl sewing pattern, so you can make your own!

Gah! Go buy it!

Esther Marie

It's my sister Esther's birthday today, so she gets a portrait! 101 Dalmatians is one of her favourite films, so I wanted to recreate that famous dog walking scene with the scottish terrier she's always wanted.

This is my 74th portrait for my daily portrait challenge. You can see the other 73 over at the tumblog, 366 Portraits.

Click for larger size. Digital.

Once again, I had it printed by the lovely ladies at Rae & Bennett Fine Art Printers on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag, my new favourite paper. Looks better in print! This is the paper I'll be using for the giclée prints that will be available in my online store, coming real soon.
