I wanted to post about this a while ago, but had to see if I could get through the first 2 weeks first.

I've set myself a drawing challenge for 2012- to make a new portrait everyday. A mix of live, drawn, painted, and digital so far... some more complicated than others. I hope to do some small animated ones soon!

Aim is to post the results everyday on the main tumblr, 366 Portraits. If I'm particularly fond of one it will make it's way here on the blog as well.

Hello folks! Here's hoping you had a very merry christmas-time and a jolly new year. I spent it all with friends and family trying to survive the sweltering heat. Although the notorious Christmas Day hailstorm was the closest thing I've had to a white Christmas in over 10 years.

New Years was a bit sadder for me- spent most of it at the airport saying bon voyage to two close friends. Adam packed up to the US of A his internship, and Noemi made her way back home to Milan. Wanted to make them something small to sneak in their suitcases.

Sooo a lot has happened in the last few months!

My sister Christina's solo exhibition, Before I Wake, opened at Anna Pappas Gallery, "The Show" won best student animation at the Australian Effects and Animation Festival Awards & 2011 AniMazSpot Festival and Best Tertiary Animation at the Melbourne's ATOM Awards.

I also had my first comic published in Drawn From Life, a free cartoon newspaper edited and produced by Oslo Davis that was unleashed across Melbourne as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival:

Well the time has finally come- yesterday I submitted by major project/grad film. The short 2D animation follows the pre-show everyday rituals of a travelling Carnival troupe, and took about 6-8 sleepless months to complete during my final year at RMIT. It won't be online (in full) for a while, but I will make and post a teaser/trailer shortly!

Now I'm going to sleep some more!

New stop-motion: Shadowplay

Shadowplay is now online! A series of stop-motion vignettes created for Drawing No 1, a group exhibition exploring the mysterious realm of childhood, held at c3 contemporary art space in July/Aug 2010.

The animation was created traditionally using a series of handmade shadow puppets. The final work was then projected onto a mystical dream catcher, suspended within the sky. The projection created a multi-layered viewing experience where visions of shadows moved in and out of focus amongst the clouds...

The dead lines for my short film are creeping closer and closer... be prepared for more sporadic updates here!

I've just started rough animation after a fair few weeks of finalising all the layouts and backgrounds in the film. I will do a proper post soon about background art, but for now a sneak peek at some production tests experimenting with the final look of the film! I'm combining traditionally painted backgrounds and artwork with digital character animation.

Finally starting to see it all come together...
And just a few doodles from the sketchbook of ponytails, scarves and dalmatians.

Now back to the animating I go.

Final piece for my 2nd year 3D Animation unit at uni. The brief was to design, develop, model, texture, rig and animate an original character in Maya. This is my first go at animating a character in 3D. If I had more time I would add some more personality to the hands. I'm still finding the animation process a bit awkward!

This semester is now officially over- time to take a nap!

Here's my finished short! This was made for one of my animation units at university. The entire creation process from concept to completion spanned just under 3 months. For this short I tried to focus on backgrounds and compositing within After Effects, so the animation is quite limited. Animation created in Flash, backgrounds made in Photoshop, and everything composited in After Effects.

Pencil on paper. Assignment for my 2D animation class- the brief was to create an "unusual" walk cycle. Pretty happy with how this has turned out so far. Now to begin the colouring process...

So this is my first rough pencil test of the walk cycle I'm working on. My second time animating with pencil and paper. I've started with the first step, and duplicated it for now. It's quite jittery in places like the hair, coat and eyes, will need to fix on the second pass. At the moment I think the blink is a few frames too early, so I'll try and move that aswell.

I'll be adding the secondary actions of the hoodie and ponytail once I lock this down.

Any critical feedback is more than welcome, I need fresh eyes on this! I'm so tired! Ack! Bed!

Still no name for her!

Started out as a tiny sketch. Watercolour and pencil.

I re-watched My Neighbour's the Yamadas the other day. It's Isao Takahata's ('Grave of the Fireflies', 'Pom Poko', 'Only Yesterday') last film, made in 1999. It's probably one of my favourite Studio Ghibli films.

The story follows the lives of the Yamada family through a series of disconnected vignettes surrounding their everyday life. It's funny. The animation, colour and simplistic design is beautiful. The structure and style are drastically different from any other Ghibli production, so I can understand why it's perhaps not one of their most popular.

It's fairly long (100 minutes?), so make sure you have a few hours to enjoy it. Unfortunately the only decent clip I could find on youtube was the ending, so I'm posting the trailer instead:

Cut-out exercise for an Alternative Animation class at uni. Quite jittery in some(most) places because i kept knocking the camera and i had to get rid of some of the in betweens :S

At the moment I'm trying to draw out 2 storyboards, 4 model sheets and a character outline, so I might not have many updates until I'm finished. Gah!

Also I just recently got a twitter account (actually had one made for me against my will, but i'm starting to get used to it). So far it's been worth it just for the tips from AnimPodcast (Clay Kaytis), who runs the Animation Podcast. Anyone know any other good twitter-ers i should be following?

Okie dokie, so I have been quite the busy bee as of late, hence the delay in posts. Nevertheless, some recent character doodles/sketchbook scans:

observations & face studies. the three kids on the right are from this great book i found in an antique store in the US called "Who is That?". It's basically a categorised directory of head shots featuring famous actors from early cinema! Bargain.

Well I'm back from a really really quick trip to the States for a family/research/disneyland visit! Despite being back for about 4 days now, I'm still too jet lagged (18 hour flight) to write anything of substance so on to some the images!

First stop was Disneyland (yay!!) for 3 days. I got tons of visual research done... ahem:

No, seriously. I've only been there once before when I was 10, and back then I found all the crazy-eyed parents throwing their toddlers at Mickey Mouse for a photo and the long, long lines a tad overwhelming. This time I visited on the eve of my 20th birthday was overwhelmed by the wonderful artistry, craftsmanship, set design and history that I took for granted before. I have a couple thousand photos to sort through before uploading them to Flickr, but for now some disorganised samples:

Over then next 10 days or so, I went across 3 states and visited family. I was able to scan a lot of old family photos and documents- most of which I had never seen before. One day I hope to put a book together with it all, but for now i will just be slowly uploading it all...

Unfortunately I didn't get much sketching done as I planned... however upon my return my disney movie marathon has inspired a lot of construction practice... really happy with most of these as I'm getting a lot faster:

I also had the pleasure of seeing UP! while i was in Hollywood- it is an amazing movie! Such a beautiful story and the artwork & animation is phenomenal. Hands down my new favourite Pixar film. Congratulations to everyone who worked on it. I also got to attend the Encore Milt Kahl tribute presented by the Academy and hosted by Andreas Deja which was absolutely wonderful. But that recap deserves it's own post!

Something Old

So this is something I made at the beginning of the year and forgot to post... my first pencil test. Probably one of my favourite assignments so far:

We were each assigned a 20 second soundtrack and had to plan the entire animation using a dope sheet. During the production we weren't allowed to do tests so some of the timing is a bit fast/off.

anywho, i will be away for about 2 weeks so i guess this will be a mini hiatus for the blog. Heres hoping I'll have a ton of stuff to post by then!

Another painting for my 2D project, which we are animating in Flash. Using Flash/vector art seems very unnatural to me and is driving me crazy, so I'm trying to combine the best of both worlds , painting in Photoshop and than inking it to look more consistent with the Flash drawing tools. Everything is much easier with my shiny new tablet :D

I haven't been doing much sketching at all thanks to assignments, which are all due in a few weeks! 3D is coming along alright albeit slowly, I still can't get the lighting quite right:

I changed the bed sheets again, I think the plainer pattern works better than the bright red one I had earlier.

By golly 3D is forever. I haven't touched it in a week and it took me a whole day to do about 4 toys... why I chose a location that is supposed to be cluttered with such things I'll never know.

The brief is to design and model a set piece of a given story. Then we will use the camera to make a short 20 second animation moving around the space. The story revolved around a poor, but content fisherman, and I chose to do his kids bedroom/attic. Hopefully once we start texturing it will look more worn. I will probably dull the colours down as well.

Forgot to smooth out the doll's dress in that last image but I kind of like it...

Oh and I still can't get the lighting/shadows right. I want moonlight to be streaming through the windows but I guess I'll have to keep faking it until he shows us in class.

Back to uni tommorow, this break wasn't long enough dangnabbit

Have been sourcing a lot of inspiration from Käthe Kruse dolls lately, especially after acquiring a nice book chock full of photographs. She was a German doll maker from the early-mid 1900's
and designed and developed hundreds of dolls during her time. While she was in charge, all her dolls were made and hand painted by herself and other artisans, not machine-produced in anyway like most other dolls/toys at the time.

Her first doll was one she crafted for her daughters around 1906, made from a knitted towel and a potato :D

Oh and sucks to be me after spilling 6 hours worth of sharpenings on desk and carpet (not pictured)... whoops

Soon I'll post a 20second pencil animation I did for 2D which was funnnnnn

WELL time is certainly flying by and I've only just started with the $100,000 Animation Drawing course. It only took me a few seconds to realise I SERIOUSLY struggle with construction and form. Here is my first attempt:

A lot of problems with the first sketch thanks to me not taking it slowly and carefully. Please provie further critique as I post these up!

To finish on a more positive note a, sketch of Linguini from a picture on my tissue box. Yay Ratatouille. & some quic sketches of my lazyarse dog, Wishbone.

Exciting News

About a month ago I entered my short film, Bus Stop, into the iiNet Get Animated Competition. I recently found out that it has been selected as a finalist, and as a result will be screened during the iiNet Films Afloat at Darling Harbour, as part of the Sydney Festival 2009 (14-18th January)! I'm extremely chuffed to have it showcased to a whole new audience and have it judged by an amazing panel of industry professionals.

I'm not sure yet if I can afford to go up to Sydney, although I'd love to go for a few days or even just the weekend. If you are in the Sydney area/heading up to the festival, and let me know if you see it!

I love Mr. Flaversham from the Great Mouse Detective- one of the most underated Disney films (remember Ratigan's solo??). I watched it over and over as a kid. Hilarious still.

A little sketch i started, but lost interest once i messed around with the shading too much. oh wells.

Went to the 2008 RMIT BA(Animation & Interactive Media) graduate screening at ACMI tonight and was pleasantly surprised. My favourite was Late Return by Daniel Luke, great timing, animation and had me snorting with laughter on more than one occasion...

Just some sketches from the last week or so.

Thanks to all this new found spare time, I was watching Tarzan frame by frame whilst listening to Glen Keane and Ken Duncan's interviews with Clay Kaytis on the Animation Podcast and... wow. If you haven't heard any of Clay's interviews you're missing out on an insane amount of insight into the creative minds and lives of some of the best in the industry. Glen Keane and Ken Duncan were the supervising animators for Tarzan and Jane respectively. One of my favourite scenes in rough:

And a bunch of Pixar guys known as the Spline Doctors have a great podcast too with interviews with Brad Bird, Andrew Stanton, Richard Williams (!!) etc which made me squeal with glee (on a packed train no less- very awkward).

Last week I finished my first year of studying at RMIT. I a mlooking forward to focusing on 2D next year.
